Building for the Arts Grant Would Provide Critical Funding for Hugo House’s New Home

A few months ago, our executive director, Tree Swenson, wrote to you — teachers, students, friends, and supporters of Hugo House — to urge you to contact your state legislators to voice your support for full funding of the Building for the Arts grant program. Through this program, Hugo House was recommended for a grant of $1.032M — a significant portion of the funds we need to secure our new home.

Thanks to your help, the House of Representatives included full funding for Building for the Arts in their version of a state capital budget for the 2017-2019 biennium, but the Senate did not.

Now, legislators are working on reconciling the two budgets, and we are once again urging them to support this funding. Building for the Arts will not only help us fund our new home, but will support many other vital arts organizations across Washington state and fuel our region’s cultural vitality.

If you’d like to voice your support for full funding of Building for the Arts, now is the time to contact your state legislators and let them know why you think it’s important to have public support for a new and permanent home for Hugo House.

We’ve provided a script below, and you can find your legislators and their contact information here.

Dear Representative (or Senator) _____________,

I urge you to support full funding of the Building for the Arts Program within the 2017-2019 biennium state capital budget, and particularly funding for the Richard Hugo House project.

To continue to serve Washington State’s writers and readers, Hugo House needs funding for a new home. The old one was torn down and the property is being redeveloped. Funding is needed in this biennium in order to complete construction, and support from the Building for the Arts is vital.

I thank you for your consideration.
