Just the Basics: Essential Elements of Writing Fiction

New to the page? No problem! In this class we’ll start at the beginning, covering the basic elements of fiction writing (character, point of view, plot, dialogue, setting, and style) through discussions and brief readings. Through a series of linked writing exercises, we’ll practice these elements while also building the foundation of a story. Students will leave class with a stronger sense of the craft of writing fiction, as well as a solid draft of a first story.

Beginning Fall 2021, we will be adding select in-person classes back to our course catalog. The majority of our classes will still be offered via Zoom.

If a class says IN-PERSON in its title, it will take place in person at our permanent home in Seattle.

If a class says ASYNCHRONOUS in its title, it will take place on Wet Ink, our asynchronous learning platform.

If a class does not have a marker after its title, it will take place via Zoom.
