Just the Basics: Foundational Elements of Writing Fiction

In this introduction to the basics of fiction writing, we’ll start at the beginning, covering the primary elements of fiction (character, point of view, dialogue, setting, and style) through discussions, weekly readings of model short stories, and writing exercises. Each student will also have the opportunity to workshop a story draft and receive constructive feedback for revision. Students will leave the class with a stronger sense of the craft of writing fiction, as well as a polished, original short story.

Beginning Fall 2021, we will be adding select in-person classes back to our course catalog. The majority of our classes will still be offered via Zoom.

If a class says IN-PERSON in its title, it will take place in person at our permanent home in Seattle.

If a class says ASYNCHRONOUS in its title, it will take place on Wet Ink, our asynchronous learning platform.

If a class does not have a marker after its title, it will take place via Zoom.
