Write Like a Nerd: Footnotes & Lists

All Levels | Once considered a boring pilgrimage to the bottom of the page, the footnote can be a hilarious and playful tool for poetry, as shown by writers such as Lindy West, Elena Georgiou, and Jenny Boully. In this highly generative course, we will study the footnote and all its possible uses while also looking at how lists—numerical, alphabetical, pro/con, grocery, to-do, etc.—can offer a rigorous foundation with which to go wild upon and blend writing spectrums.

Beginning Fall 2021, we will be adding select in-person classes back to our course catalog. The majority of our classes will still be offered via Zoom.

If a class says IN-PERSON in its title, it will take place in person at our permanent home in Seattle.

If a class says ASYNCHRONOUS in its title, it will take place on Wet Ink, our asynchronous learning platform.

If a class does not have a marker after its title, it will take place via Zoom.

Cody Pherigo

Cody Pherigo is a queer writing animal whose studies at Bent Writing Institute and Goddard College convinced him that poets uproot politicians. He was a 2016 Ruth Stone Poetry Prize finalist and 4Culture Artists Grant recipient. Cody has self-published two chapbooks: Blue Thunder Children (2011) and Animal’s Sabbath (2013). He is a writer-in-residence with the WITS program at Seattle Arts & Lectures. Born with meconium stuck in his throat, he has been extracting it ever since.
